Korsakoff syndrome Korsakoff syndrome is a chronic memory disorder caused by severe deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1). Thiamine helps brain cells produce energy from sugar. When levels fall too low, brain cells cannot generate enough energy to function properly. Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome is the combined presence of Wernicke encephalopathy and alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome. Due to the close relationship between these two disorders, people with either are usually diagnosed with WKS as a single syndrome. It mainly causes vision changes, ataxia and impaired memory. The cause of the disorder is thiamine deficiency.
Unlike dementia, Korsakoff’s syndrome does not progress over time.
This type of dementia particularly targets memory, often leaving other thought processes intact. Excessive alcohol consumption is associated with a deficiency in
Korsakoff's syndrome damages nerve cells and supporting cells in the brain and spinal cord, as well as the part of the brain involved with memory. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (also called alcohol dementia) is a set of neurological conditions that result from a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. When someone is deficient in thiamine, his brain is less able to process sugar into energy that the brain can use to function. Korsakoff syndrome (KS) is an amnestic disorder caused by thiamine (vitamin B 1) deficiency typically associated with prolonged use of alcohol.
Korsakoff’s syndrome is a form of alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD) and accounts for around 10% of dementias in younger people. It is caused by a lack of vitamin B1 (thiamine). It is most commonly associated with alcohol abuse but can also be caused by excessive vomiting in pregnancy (hyperemesis gravidarum), gastric bands and bulimia.
Korsakoff (1887, 1889a, 1889b) described a syndrome of characteristic memory disturbance, which he had witnessed in ‘not less than 30’ cases of chronic alcohol abuse, as well as 16 patients in whom alcohol had not played a role.
The Korsakoff syndrome or the alcohol dementia syndrome is caused by the lack of vitamin B1 (thymine) in the body. This is due to poor nutrition and inflammation in the stomach lining.
